After Bear’s successful launch of its flagship, all-foam Bear mattress in 2015, the company added another mattress model to its line. The Bear Hybrid mattress was introduced in 2018.

Like the Bear mattress, the Bear Hybrid mattress was designed with recovery in mind. All of Bear’s mattresses use Celliant covers. Celliant is a responsive fabric, which is purported to regulate temperature, aid recovery, promote more restful sleep, and offer a wide range of additional benefits.

While the original Bear mattress is constructed entirely of foam, the Bear Hybrid mattress features multiple foam layers paired with an innerspring layer. This construction can offer some of the benefits of foam with the more traditional feel of an innerspring mattress.

Construction

The Bear Hybrid mattress is 14 inches tall, and it is constructed of four distinct layers.

The cover of the Bear Hybrid mattress uses Celliant fabric. Celliant fabric aims to recycle the body’s energy, which is thought to promote a better night’s sleep, regulate temperature, aid recovery, and more. This top layer is quilted with gel foam, which offers softness and cooling properties.

The next layer of the mattress is composed of Serene Foam, a premium comfort foam. This foam is designed to provide contouring and pressure point relief. Next, the Bear mattress features a layer of responsive transition foam. This layer offers additional pressure relief and airflow.

The innerspring layer features a Quantum Edge coil system, providing support and bounce. The coils are individually-wrapped, which can help reduce motion transfer. Additionally, the Quantum Edge system uses narrow-diameter coils near the perimeter of the bed to provide extra edge support. Innerspring support layers are usually more breathable than most foam support layers, so this could help the Bear Hybrid mattress sleep cooler than some mattresses.

The final base layer of the mattress uses high-density foam for extra durability.

The foams in the Bear Hybrid mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they’ve been tested for ozone depleters, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and other standards.

Firmness

The Bear Hybrid mattress ranks around a 6 on the 10-point firmness scale, so it can be considered a medium-firm mattress. This firmness is right in the range that most sleepers find acceptable, so it should be comfortable for a wide variety of sleepers. However, as always, comfort is subjective, so some sleepers may prefer a softer or firmer mattress. Weight can play a role in what firmness individual sleepers prefer. Sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may prefer a slightly softer mattress, while sleepers over 230 pounds might prefer a slightly firmer mattress.

The Bear Hybrid mattress is available in all standard sizes. We’ll share the list price for each size of the mattress in the table below. Bear regularly offers discounts and promotions, so you might be able to purchase a Bear Hybrid mattress below list price.

Bear Hybrid Mattress Breakdown

Read on for more information on the Bear Hybrid mattress’s construction, durability, conforming, edge support, temperature regulation, off-gassing, and motion isolation. For more information on the review process we use, please review our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

The Bear Hybrid mattress features some of the same high-quality, technologically-advanced materials used in the original Bear mattress. However, it also offers some additional quality components.

In both the original Bear mattress and the Bear Hybrid mattress, the Celliant mattress cover is one of the most notable features. Celliant is designed to reflect the body’s energy back towards it, which is thought to provide benefits like better sleep, improved temperature regulation, quicker recovery, and more. Only a few other mattress brands use Celliant fabric, so the use of this fabric sets the Bear mattress and the Bear Hybrid mattress apart from most other mattresses on the market.

The Bear Hybrid mattress also features a Quantum Edge coil system. In this system, each coil is individually wrapped to reduce motion transfer. The edge of the innerspring layer features narrow-diameter coils, which help support the edge.

Additionally, the Bear Hybrid mattress uses CertiPUR-US certified foams. This certification indicates that the Bear Hybrid mattress is free from substances like formaldehyde, mercury, lead, ozone depleters, and more.

How long will it last?

The Bear mattress was introduced in 2018, so there is not yet much evidence of how well the mattress holds up with routine use over time. Most hybrid mattresses last 6-8 years, and we would expect the Bear Hybrid mattress to have similar longevity. However, if the Bear Hybrid mattress does not hold up as expected, a 20-year warranty offers peace of mind.

How well does it conform to my body?

The Bear Hybrid mattress offers good conforming abilities.

The cover of the mattress is quilted with gel foam, which offers softness and conforming. The next two foam layers offer addition contouring and pressure relief. Since the coils in the innerspring layer are individually-wrapped and can move independently of each other, the innerspring layer could contribute to additional contouring while preventing sleepers from sinking in too deeply.

Is the edge supportive?

The Bear Hybrid mattress uses a Quantum Edge coil system, which uses narrow-diameter coils near the perimeter of the bed. This reinforces the edge of the bed, which makes it easier to sit or sleep near the edge without a feeling of instability.

Does it sleep hot?

The Bear Hybrid mattress should provide a cooler night’s sleep than many mattresses on the market. The Celliant fabric used in the mattress cover is purported to regulate temperature. The quilted cover uses a gel foam that offers additional cooling properties. The Bear Hybrid’s innerspring layer can also allow additional airflow, which can help regulate temperature.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

As is common with mattresses that feature foam, the Bear Hybrid mattress may emit a slight odor when first unboxed. The smell is not harmful, and it should dissipate within a few hours to a few days. Just leave the mattress in a well-ventilated space to allow it to air out.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The top layers of the Bear Hybrid mattress feature foam, which can help absorb motion and reduce the overall motion felt across the surface of the bed when one partner moves. The innerspring layer of the Bear Hybrid mattress offers bounce, and that bounce could create some slight motion transfer. However, the coils in the Bear Hybrid mattress are individually-wrapped, which can help prevent excessive motion transfer across the coil system.

Who is Best Suited for a Bear Hybrid Mattress?

Whether or not a mattress feels comfortable usually boils down to personal preference, so what feels perfect to some sleepers may not to other sleepers. However, factors like sleep position, body weight, and sleep style can play a major role in what sort of mattress individual sleepers prefer.

The Bear Hybrid mattress offers a combination of contouring and support that can accommodate most side, back, and stomach sleepers. The contouring can help relieve the sharp pressure points often associated with side sleeping, while the support and firmness can help prevent back and stomach sleepers from sinking in too deeply.

Because the mattress is medium-firm, it should be able to accommodate sleepers of most weight groups. However, some sleepers over 230 pounds may prefer a firmer mattress that prevents them from sinking in as deeply. Some sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer a softer mattress that allows them to sink in more.

Since the Bear Hybrid mattress was designed with recovery in mind, it may be particularly appealing to athletes and other people who live active lifestyles. The Celliant fabric used in the mattress cover is purported to aid recovery, increase circulation, and improve sleep. If you are interested in trying the latest in sleep technology, you may want to consider a Bear Hybrid mattress.

Additionally, since the Bear Hybrid mattress offers the motion isolation associated with foam and the bounce associated with innerspring coils, the mattress may appeal to couples. Motion isolation can help prevent sleep disturbances when one partner moves during the night, and bounce can be beneficial for sexual activity.
