Who Should Buy an Air Purifier

If you have absolutely any sensitivities to any allergens you need an air purifier. A good air purifier may allow you to keep a pet, despite a sensitivity to dander. When Spring finally comes, you won’t be rejoicing the pollen that comes with it – unless your air purifier has protected your home and given you a safe place to breath. Your home will need cleaned and those cleaning products you use to scrub the toilet will release chemicals into the air. Rather than breathing them in, an air purifier will protect you from the damage they can do to your lungs. Bringing the seasonal decorations down from the attic can put mold spores and dust into your air and an air purifier will help keep you from having an allergic reaction. An air purifier can even keep a virus from spreading through your whole family, even should one of you contract an illness.

Unfortunately, even if you have no problems with your own breathing, there’s still a fair chance that your family members or guests will suffer from a poor air quality. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies and they are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness. The chances of you never seeing the benefit of an air purifier is slim to none. Even if you don’t have the air purifier operating at all times, having it and not needing it all the time is still better than not having it when you’re congested and could really use it. In fact, allergies and breathing sensitivities aside, it’s just nice to have fresh air and some types will keep you figuratively and literally breathing in the roses even when your home is all closed up. Important Features to Consider

An air purifier should do several things well. Here’s what to consider when selecting an air purifier for your home or office:

  • HEPA filters. These filters may be the most popular because they do rid the air of the vast majority of irritants and pollutants. They’re ideal for those allergy-sensitive people who need a break from the everyday dander, dust, pollen and mold. This won’t pull from the outdoors to introduce new allergens into your home, but rather just address virtually all the issues you already have inside. But you do need to keep in mind this type is designed to have a disposable filter that needs regularly replaced.
  • Air exchangers. If you notice a tendency for your air to be stale and stagnant, an air-to-air exchanger can be the fix you need to make sure you’re not breathing the same air over and over. Not only will this allow you to breath better with “fresh” air regularly being cycled through, it will keep the bad contents of air moving so they will be less likely to be breathed by you or your family. This purifier will bring new, fresh air from the outside into your home regularly so if you’re allergic to your inside dog, this could be a big help, but if you’re sensitive to pollen, it may not be a win for you. And if you live next to a chicken farm, this may not be your favorite way to “purify” your air. This will need incorporated into your existing HVAC, though, so it’ll require a big upfront investment.
  • Ionic air purifiers. Ionic purifiers are typically the most quiet, as they can operate without a robust motor. (But will often be paired with another type filtration that does use such a motor.) They will release negative ions into the air, that will attach to positively charged particles in the air; namely dust, dander, smoke, viruses and bacteria. The particles will then be so heavy they will fall, some types make the particles fall to the ground so you can sweep or vacuum them. Most versions of “ionizers,” though, will suck the polluted air into the purifier, then have the ions attach and drop to the bottom of the unit, never seeing the ground again. Where they go isn’t the selling point, though; it’s that they’re no longer in your air, ready to be breathed in. The negative ion purifiers will not remove odors, though, so take note if you have any smell concerns.
  • Activated carbon air purifiers. For people who are sensitive to smells, this may be the best purifier, as it is the only purifier that’s specifically intended to rid your home of the fumes and odors. Since these odors come with chemicals, smokes and gasses, you may be best suited to this type of purifier if you’re goal is to eliminate any of these. And keep in mind that cleaning products that have these chemicals can be removed from the air, too. This air purifier will, essentially, clean the air of cleaners.
  • Reusable filters. Depending on the type of air purifier you get, you may or may not have disposable filters contained within. HEPA filters, carbon filters, electric air cleaners and central air cleaners will have filters, but Ionic air purifiers will not, for example. You may be able to find reusable filters for those that take them, but the bulk of the purifiers will need to have their filters replaced periodically. When making your purchase, take the time to find out if you can get a reusable filter and if not, how often the disposable filters need replaced and how much they cost. That may be a big expense over time that leads you to another type of purifier.
  • Odor eliminators. While activated carbon may be the only purifier that’s designed to remove odors, there are others that also, coincidentally do so. For example, if the purifier eliminates mold and the mold is causing an odor, then that purifier will also remove odor. There are also other types of filters that also feature some activated carbon along with their primary source of filtration and purification. You’re most likely to see this combination in HEPA filters, but others exist so take note and seek out odor elimination air purifiers if that’s what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an air purifier and how does it work?

Air purifiers typically will use a system of fans to suck the air from your home or office into them and remove the harmful particles through a series of filters before pushing the air back out to be breathed in. There are a variety of different types that target specific particles and contents, but if there is a content in your air that is, or could potentially bother you, there’s likely an air purifier that will remove it for you and help improve the quality of your air. Air purifiers, depending on the type, can remove dust, pollen, mold, fumes, smoke, dander, odors, chemicals, viruses, bacteria, pathogens, and gasses from your breathing air. They can also force your old, stale air out of the house and bring in new, fresh air. No matter what your current air situation is, there’s a good chance the right air purifier can improve it.

What are the different types of air purifiers?

There are seven types of air purifiers that you can get and depending on your need will depend on which you want to get. There are Ultraviolet air purifiers that are used in hospitals and laboratories to remove potentially harmful viruses, mold, bacteria, and pathogens. HEPA Filters are effective with sucking the allergens out of the air. Activated Carbon excels at at removing smoke, odors and fumes from the air. Ionic air purifiers will take care of nearly anything in the air, but they won’t help much with the smells. Electronic air cleaners will remove virtually all unwanted particulates and smells – but they need to be professionally installed, the filters need replaced and the wires cleaned after every month of use. Central Air Cleaners are connected to your HVAC system and need to be professionally installed but will also take care of all unwanted particles. Air-to-Air Exchangers will ventilate your home and force the old air out, with all the particulates with it, while also pulling in new and fresh air from outside – also need to be professionally installed.

Will an air purifier help me sleep?

If the reason you’re not sleeping is due to unclean or impure air, then yes, an air purifier can help you sleep. Air purifiers will remove a lot of the allergens from the air so if you’re congested or sensitive to pollen, dust, mold or dander, then an air purifier will very likely do wonders for your quality of sleep. If you have no notable trouble sleeping, you may still notice a bit deeper, higher quality sleep after installing an air purifier into your bedroom just because the particles removed from your breathing air may be causing you minute problems you hadn’t even noticed. And, an added bonus that will go along with that better night’s sleep, you may even minimize or eliminate your snoring. If your snores are caused by your airway being congested (and you may not even notice that – but trust us, your partner does) then an air filter may be a real help.

Are room air purifiers effective?

Whether your air purifier is effective is entirely based on what you want it to be effective doing. For example, if you want your air purifier to keep you from getting the flu, then a UV air purifier is your best bet at effectiveness. But if you try to use that, rather than an Activated Carbon air purifier to rid your home of smoke, it won’t be effective. The air purifier you chose is only as effective at what it’s meant to purify; Air purifiers aren’t really one-size-fits-all homes or offices. You need to choose what you want to get out of your air and find the purifier that does that the best.
