Little girl in a booster seat

A properly installed booster seat can help to protect bigger kids in case of an accident, but there’s a lot to consider when it comes to purchasing the right one. Research shows that up to 73% of car seats and booster seats are incorrectly installed, putting children at risk. You can visit a car seat safety clinic to ensure your child’s seat is installed correctly, or visit your local police/fire station to have your install checked. Just like car seat, when properly installed a booster seat can significantly reduce the risk of death.  When installed forward facing, booster seats are most effective with a five-point harness, but a seat belt is suitable for bigger big kids. The good news is that all booster seats for sale in the U.S. must meet strict guidelines set out by the Federal government. So even if you can’t afford a top-of-the-line model, you know your child will still be adequately protected. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) provides annual ratings of booster seats, and Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews of many car seats and boosters.

We reviewed dozens of booster seats to identify the best of the best. We looked at safety testing and longevity as well as comfort and style. We considered every budget and found convertible, high-backed and backless boosters that fit any of your needs. For additional safety measures, check out our Parent’s Guide to Child Safety.

Who Should Buy a Booster Seat

If you have small child, you’ll need a booster eventually. As long as you drive, you’ll need to restrain your child in a safe way and that certainly isn’t just your car’s standard seat belt. Safety belts are designed for 165 pound males, so of course you’ll want something for your 50 pound child. In fact, even if he has already out grown the car seat, there are still plenty of steps between car seat and seat belt. The various types of boosters are those steps and you’ll want to take full advantage of each one to keep your child safe. Even if you only drive occasionally; even if you never drive at all – you’ll still want a booster for the occasional time car-riding comes into play.

Even if your family has grown and you just have occasional riders that will need the booster, it’s well worth the investment. You can pick up safe boosters for not a lot of money and it certainly beats the alternative of taking your niece, grandchild, or friend’s child in the car without a booster. Whether you babysit or just have friends with kids, it’s nice to be able to have the ability to drive places with those children. After all, your friend shouldn’t always be the one driving just because she has a kid.

Important Features to Consider

A booster seat should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a booster seat for your child:

  • Convertible. This style of seat can be used as a rear-facing car seat, forward facing, and as a booster — with or without the back. These models offer value for the money due to their all-in-one design, however, the initial cost can be steep. They can also be quite heavy, making them not ideal for switching between vehicles.
  • Highback. A highback booster seat is just what it sounds like – it has a high back which helps support the child in the seat. They are typically used for children aged 4-8, and are available with or without a 5-point harness. Some models will convert to backless for when your child is ready, and they are typically lighter than convertible models.
  • Backless. Backless booster seats are a popular choice due to their lightweight and compact design, which makes them easily portable from vehicle to vehicle. They still provide all the proper positioning until your child is ready to use just a seat belt.
  • Rear-facing. Rear-face as long as possible. Studies show that rear-facing is the safest for children, up to the age of 2 years old, and beyond, if possible. Keep your child rear-facing in their car seat until they reach the manufacturer’s maximum height or weight limit for the seat. Laws vary from state to state. Purchasing an all-in-one seat can provide you with long-term use, even though the upfront costs are a little higher.
  • Expiration date. Always check the expiration date of any booster seat to ensure that it’s still safe for your child to use. You must also ensure that your child meets the minimum age, height, and weight requirements for the seat’s use — this will vary from model to model. You always want to purchase a new seat for each child — never used, as you do not know if it has been in an accident, thus reducing its effectiveness.
  • Proper fit, every time. Ensure buckles are properly secured each and every time you put your child in their car seat, ensuring the seat belt is properly positioned over the shoulder and lap.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a booster seat and how does it work?

A booster seat is an in-between stage for your child who is too large for a standard car seat but too small for your car’s seat belt. It can be transitional, and allow your child to use a 5-point harness for a while still, and then convert into a high backed booster. The high back boosters will allow your child to use the car’s seat belt, even though it would not typically be in the correct position. They will lift your child up slightly and give padding on the back to extend the car’s back seat, putting your child in a more safe position to use the seat belt. Some high back boosters will also have a seat belt “guide” that will hold the belt down and keep it in the proper place for your child’s size; that is, across her chest and not her neck and the lap belt across her lap, not her stomach. A backless booster is for children even older, but not quite tall enough to fit in the car as recommended for the seat belt. It is intended for when your child only needs a small boost (hence the name) up to put him in the right position.

When can a child be in a backless booster seat?

It is so much easier to move your child from one car to another that you may be tempted to get them in that backless booster as soon as you can. But don’t rush it! Each time you progress up the next seat level (Rear facing, forward facing, booster, backless booster, seat belt), you’re losing a level of protection so keep him in each stage for as long as possible for maximum safety benefit. (Plus it’s less of a financial burden to spread each of these purchases over several years than than just a few.) Your child’s car and booster seats will have height and weight requirements included in their user manual and you will want to adhere to these.

You can move from car seat to booster when they outgrow the harnesses (typically between 40-65 pounds). To move to a backless booster, you’ll want your child to be able to bend her legs at a 90 degree angle while her back is flush against the car’s seat. She’ll need to be at least 35″ tall (but most likely a bit taller), and under 4’9″ (which is the minimum for regular seat belt use without any booster.) The seat belt should come across her chest, and not her neck.

What is the law for booster seats?

The laws regarding car seats and booster seats are regulated by the state, so you’ll need to check your specific state guidelines to be 100% sure of your standards. They all vary in specifics, and you’ll want to err on the side of caution for your child’s safety. You’ll want to take special care in reading the law because states often use either “and” or “or” to detail their standards for height, weight and age. Obviously, if it states “and” then your child will need to meet all those standards and if it’s “or” then they need to meet just one of the standards.

If your child is in a grey area for the law, you want to go with the stricter guideline. For the most part, laws determine that children under 2 should be in a rear facing car seat, and in a forward facing car seat until 4 years old, then a booster until 8. Some states also require your car and booster seats are federally approved car seats so you can’t craft your own or use a seat from another country’s manufacturer. (But for any mass produced car seat, you’re likely to be fine.)

When can kids stop using booster seats?

Again, you’ll need to check your state’s laws, but in general terms, you’ll want to keep your child a booster of some kind until he or she is at least 4’9″ and over 65 pounds. That tends to happen around the age of 8-12 years old. Each child will reach that size at their own pace, though and you can’t set a hard and fast rule of, “When you’re 8, you don’t need the booster” if you have a small child. Your bigger children will grow out of the need for the booster faster, but you can always hold them in a bit longer just to make it seem a bit more “fair” to your other children and possibly avoid a few fights in the long run. And worst case scenario, your child is safer for longer that way.

Because boys tend to grow faster (and a bit bigger, as a rule), your sons will outgrow the booster faster than your girls. And while that is hard to explain to a little kid who just wants to be a big girl, you have to swallow down that battle and do what’s safest for your kid.
