How We Chose the Best Vacuum Sealers

Versatility

We looked at the functions on each machine to determine its versatility. Common options include settings for wet, moist, and dry food. We also found machines that came with additional hoses so you could seal outside of the deck. When looking at versatility, we also checked the machines ability to work in different locations. Some machines are made for easy transport and can be used on the go while others are meant to be stationary. We determined versatile machines should have a variety of settings for different sealing options, include accessories that most home cooks would use, and have the ability to use the machine in different settings.

Suction Power

The power of the suction on the machine is one of the biggest factors we considered when looking at the quality of each vacuum sealer. The machines needed to have enough suction to vacuum seal a variety of vacuum bag sizes. A vacuum sealer’s suction power also determines how long it takes to vacuum out the air and seal the bag. Because of this, we took the length of time required to seal bags into account too.
Another small factor we considered with suction power is the machines ability to suction the entire bag. Most machines were able to seal the bag, but some of them required more space (up to one and a half inches in some cases) around the outside of the bag to create a tight seal.

Noise

Since vacuum sealers are powerful machines, we expected them to have some noise when in use. While we were choosing each of the models, we found ones that had more noise than others. Some models also featured cooling fans to decrease the amount of time users have to wait in between sealing. While these are great for users who want to seal a lot of products at once, they greatly increase the noise of the machine. We also looked at how much vibration each machine had while in use. Vibration is something we expected just like noise, but some machines put out a lot more vibration than others. Most of the machines that have a lot of suction power and are larger also are the noisiest.

Cost

Determining the price of each machine was an easy task, but we still had to determine whether the machine was truly worth that cost. We looked at what type of value the machine had, how it performed, and if it met our expectations for the price.

Just because a machine was more expensive did not automatically make it more valuable. We looked at what came with the machine, what features it had, and how much a user could control with the machine.

Another factor we considered with the cost of the machine is the accessories. We looked at how much the machine comes with and how much users had to purchase separately.

How to Use a Vacuum Sealer

An external vacuum sealer works by suctioning the air out of a vacuum bag and sealing it to preserve freshness and lock in moisture. By reducing air, you reduce the chances of a food item spoiling.

To use most external vacuum sealers, you will place the food in a pre-made bag or with a roll of vacuum bag material. When adding the food to the bag, you must follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for how much space to leave around the outside of the bag.

After turning your machine on, allowing it to heat up, and selecting the correct setting, you can then guide your food into the deck. Most decks are 12 inches, which leaves plenty of room for even the biggest vacuum bags. After the bag is secured to the deck, the machine will then suck the air out of the bag and create a tight seal at the top of it. Most machines will flash a light or make a noise to let you know it’s sealed.

Once you’ve created the seal, you can store the food in a freezer. Vacuum sealing may allow food to stay fresh for up to three times longer than storing it in unsealed bags.

What to Look for in a Vacuum Sealer

When you’re shopping for a vacuum sealer, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Make sure you pay close attention to each of these features.

Bag Size

The amount of food you plan on sealing will play a big part on which vacuum sealer you need to purchase. Some vacuum sealers, like the handheld models, may only be able to seal small bags, while larger models can accommodate bigger bags. If you plan to serve large servings of meat or a lot of food at once, a larger vacuum sealer may be better for your needs. Most large models also accommodate smaller bags. Many vacuum sealers have the option of using vacuum bag rolls. These are ideal if you want to create custom-sized bags.

Accessories

If you plan to use your vacuum sealer for things like canning, you will need to find one that comes with a vacuum tube. You may also be able to purchase these accessories separately, but you’ll need to make sure they’re compatible with your sealer. Other accessories you might be able to get are bottle tubes and vacuum containers. These containers are ideal for people who want to vacuum seal food without a bag. Each manufacturer may have different accessories and recommendations for these accessories. Even if you do not need accessories when you purchase your sealer, you may want to choose one that comes with the ability to purchase them later.

Power

When it comes to the power of your sealer, more power isn’t automatically better. In fact, if you don’t need the extra power, you could just be creating more unnecessary noise in your kitchen or workspace. If you plan to use the sealer on a regular basis and you have a lot of work for it, more power is a better choice. If you’re only going to use your vacuum sealer occasionally and do not expect to have a heavy workload, you can usually get away with a lower power option.

Unit Size

The amount of space you have for your sealer typically determines the size sealer you’ll need. If you have a lot of counter and storage space, you can usually have a larger and more powerful sealer with more features on it. They take up a lot of room, though, so if your space is limited, you may want to consider something smaller. You don’t have to make the choice between an industrial grade and a small portable sealer. Many home kitchen models are medium in size and are lightweight without taking up a lot of space.

What are the Different Types of Vacuum Sealers?

Can’t decide which type of vacuum sealer will work best for your needs? Here’s a breakdown of what each one does and how you can use it!

External

An external vacuum sealer provides versatility, ease of use, and works well for most home kitchen applications. Many models are lightweight and will not take up a lot of space in your kitchen, so they’re the perfect small appliance even if you don’t have a lot of space. You can use an external vacuum sealer to store meat in bulk, create flavorful sous vide meals, and even make your own canned goods with the right attachments. They’re great for packing bread, nuts, cheeses, meats, and most other household foods. These sealers can be pricey which may not be worth it if you only plan to use them once or twice.

Handheld

If you are just getting started with vacuum sealing, you only need a sealer for small jobs, or you want to take your sealer on the road, a handheld vacuum sealer is a great option. These are portable and have a simple user interface. Most models allow you to plug in and use them quickly. Many varieties also come with rechargeable batteries so you can go cordless. Handheld sealers are among the least expensive and come in small, compact sizes. While you do not need a lot of space to use or store a handheld sealer, because of their small size, handheld sealers may only be able to handle small jobs. They are not made to use for a lot of jobs in a row and they may not be ideal if you want to use a vacuum sealer regularly.

Chamber

A chamber sealer is the largest type of vacuum sealer and can handle most jobs, including commercial ones. These sealers work from within a chamber instead of externally like the other options available. They’re excellent for restaurants or bulk packaging businesses because of their large capacity. Because of this, they are best suited for regular use and industrial applications. A chamber vacuum sealer may be required for commercial jobs, but it’s probably overkill for a home cook because they are large and tend to be far more expensive than other varieties.
