Casper, a leader in the bed-in-a-box market, offers several different types of memory foam mattresses. The Casper Essential is the company’s entry-level mattress, a firm model with a budget-friendly price tag. The Essential is a straightforward design with three layers of memory foam and a zippered, removable polyester cover. Unlike other mattresses with similar price points, the Essential does not use as much memory foam, so it doesn’t provide as much contouring as you might expect, but it still offers plenty of support and pressure relief. Ideal for price-conscious shoppers, the Casper Essential offers plenty of support for back and stomach sleepers, as well as those who change positions throughout the night, while still sleeping cool. And as with all Casper mattresses, the Essential comes with free delivery, a risk-free 100-night sleep trial, and a 10-year limited warranty. Read on to learn more about this affordable mattress and what you might expect when you order one for yourself.
Casper Essential Mattress Overview
Everything you love about Casper for an affordable price.Check Price
At just 11 inches high, the Casper Essential has only three layers of foam under its polyester blend cover: a layer of firm poly foam for comfort, a layer of memory foam, and a base of supportive high-density memory foam. The top layer of poly foam responds quickly to pressure, but doesn’t allow for too much sinkage. The memory foam layer has a slower response to pressure, and provides some additional contouring and sinkage, but the firmer top layer means that this contouring isn’t as pronounced as softer mattresses. Finally, the base layer ensures that the mattress maintains its shape. Unlike other Casper models, the Essential does not offer Zoned Support, with more firmness under the lower back, but rathers maintains uniform firmness throughout the entire mattress. Casper uses open-cell memory foam, which supports better airflow for cooler sleeping, and all of the foams are Certi-PUR US certified, so you know their safe.
The Essential’s polyester blend cover is soft and smooth to the touch. Its deep charcoal gray color easily hides stains and spills. The zippered cover can also be removed for easy cleaning.
Firmness is a subjective measurement, and depends largely on individual preference, body size and sleeping position. With that in mind, the Casper Essential is rated a 7-7.5 on a firmness scale of 1-10, making it a firm mattress. Sleepers are not likely to experience the same amount of “sinkage” that they would with other memory foam mattresses. When you sleep on a Casper Essential, you are much more likely to feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the bed, rather than feeling like you are in the bed. Still, the top two layers of poly foam and memory foam conform enough to your body to provide some pressure point relief, in particular for those with average or heavier body types.
The following table outlines the price for each of the Casper Essential’s six sizes, before any sales or discounts.

Casper Essential Mattress Breakdown
Below, we answer some of the most common questions about the Casper Essential mattress. For more on our mattress review process, check out our methodology.
Is it made from quality materials?
The Casper Essential is made from Fusion polyfoam, visco elastic memory foam, and high-density memory foam, similar to the company’s other mattresses. The mattress was designed to be affordable, so while the materials are certainly durable and of good quality, other Casper models may have higher quality materials.
How long will it last?
Casper mattresses appear to be fairly durable, with an average expected lifespan of about 7-10 years, which is on par with most foam mattresses. However, as the company has only been in business for five years, it’s too soon to determine how well the mattresses hold up in the long term.
How well does it conform to my body?
Because the Casper Essential only has three layers of foam and is comparatively thin, it does not contour as much as other similar mattresses. The top layer of Fusion polyfoam will sink fairly quickly, and back sleepers are likely to find that the mattress conforms to their lower backs quite comfortably. Stomach sleepers, particularly those of average to heavier body types, will have good spinal alignment, without their lower body sinking too much into the mattress. The heavier parts of your body will sink down and be cradled by the memory foam, but you aren’t likely to feel the same level of contouring and hug with the Essential as you might with higher-end all-foam mattresses. This also means you are less likely to feel “stuck” like you would with other mattresses. However, side sleepers are likely to find that the Essential is too firm for comfort. Although the memory foam layer does provide some contouring for pressure relief on the shoulders and hips, it’s not likely to be comfortable enough for anyone who sleeps strictly on their side.
Is the edge supportive?
Edge support is a concern if you sleep close to the edge of the bed, or sit on the sides of your bed on a regular basis. Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Casper Essential doesn’t have reinforced edges, and thus may be vulnerable to more compression and sagging. If you spend a lot of time with most of your weight in one area, the Essential will have some compression, and you may feel like you’re rolling out of bed while you sleep. If you keep your weight evenly distributed throughout the mattress, and avoid sitting on one area of the edge on a regular basis, this should not be a concern.
Does it sleep hot?
The Casper Essential sleeps cooler than most memory-foam mattresses, thanks to the open-cell foam used in the mattress construction. The mattress absorbs less body heat than other mattresses, allowing it to maintain a cooler and more comfortable temperature.
Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?
As with any memory foam or bed-in-a-box mattress, you should expect some offgassing and odors when your Casper Essential is new. The smell should dissipate fairly quickly, though, within a few days.
Will I feel my partner move during the night?
The Casper Essential provides excellent motion isolation, so you should not feel your sleeping partner move throughout the night as they change positions or get in and out of bed. If you tend to move around a lot, you won’t be disturbed by the motion or any noise, allowing you to get more restful sleep.
Who is Best Suited for a Casper Essential Mattress?
The Casper Essential is a fairly firm mattress, and suits combination sleepers (those who change position throughout the night), as it is supportive enough to allow motion without feeling “stuck.” However, because it is on the firmer end of the spectrum, it is better suited for people with average to heavier body types (130 pounds and above). For people who sleep strictly on their sides, a softer mattress is likely to be more comfortable, as it provides more contouring, and stomach sleepers may find that the Essential lacks enough support in the lower back.
For people who sleep with a partner, the Casper Essential, like most memory foam mattresses, provides excellent motion isolation, so you won’t feel your partner moving around. It is also virtually silent when bearing weight. However, the firm memory foam doesn’t provide very much bounce or responsiveness, so it’s not ideal for sex.
The Casper Essential is a budget-friendly mattress option, but it is made with lower quality foam, and therefore may not be as durable or long-lasting as other mattresses. That being said. parents looking for a mattress for their teens should consider the Casper Essential, as it provides adequate support and comfort for a growing teen without a big price tag.
Casper Essential vs. Original Casper Mattress
The Casper Essential is Casper’s entry into the budget category of memory foam mattresses, and has some significant differences compared to the Original Casper. For starters, the Casper Essential only has three layers of foam to the Original’s four. The Original Casper has a layer of breathable comfort foam, a layer of visco-elastic memory foam, a transitional layer providing zoned support, and a high density foam support layer. The additional layer adds an inch to the Original’s depth — making it 12 inches — but more importantly, the Zoned Support layer provides increased support to the lower back and midriff, while maintaining softness under your upper and lower body. The original Casper is softer than the Essential, with a 5.5 firmness rating, but it does offer the same level of motion isolation and coolness. It’s also a bit more conforming and offers more contouring and pressure relief than the Essential. Although the Essential is best suited for stomach and back sleepers, the original is comfortable for sleepers in any position, except for stomach sleepers with a heavier body type.
