The Puffy mattress is a 10-inch tall memory foam mattress with three layers of foam and a stain-resistant cover. The breathable fabric cover can also be removed and washed as needed.

The top layer is Cooling Cloud gel memory foam, which draws heat away from the body with increased airflow. This keeps the Puffy mattress cooler than the average memory foam mattress. The softness of this layer allows for close contouring and a feeling of sinking in. The comfortable foam cushions your shoulders and hips. The second layer is ClimateComfort foam that stabilizes the temperature of the mattress for a consistent feel. The cushioning support relieves pressure points with a cradling effect. The bottom layer of the Puffy mattress is 6” of firm core support foam. This adaptive foam provides full body support and even weight distribution to keep your spine aligned.

Puffy uses a Variable Pressure Foaming process to make each layer of polyurethane foam, which is more environmentally friendly than other foam manufacturing processes. The foams used are also CertiPUR-US certified, as they are made without the use of harmful chemicals, heavy metals, or ozone depleters.

The all-foam construction of the Puffy mattress is designed for any surface. It does not necessarily require a foundation, but it works well with box springs, adjustable bed frames, flat bed frames, and slats.

The Puffy mattress is available in one firmness option that is considered medium-firm. The top 2-inch layer of gel memory is soft and cushioning, giving you a feeling of being hugged by the mattress. This cushions pressure points, especially the hips and shoulders. The second layer of foam is designed to gently conform to the shape of your body, while being firm enough to prevent the feeling of sinking in too far or being stuck. The firm core support layer adds additional support, providing a medium firmness that responds to pressure and keeps your spine aligned. This medium-firm feel is designed to support a wide range of comfort preferences and sleeping positions.

Puffy Mattress Breakdown

To help determine if the Puffy mattress is right for you, it is important to consider factors including the quality of materials, overall support, and motion isolation. To learn about what we pay close attention to when reviewing mattresses, take a look at our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

The Puffy mattress is made entirely in the United States from high-quality foams. Each layer of foam is created with a Variable Pressure Foaming process and is CertiPUR-US certified. Puffy mattresses are made in small batches to lessen the amount of time spent compressed before shipment, which also maintains the quality and integrity of the mattress. The premium firm core support foam is especially durable. While Puffy does not disclose the exact densities of each layer of foam, the unique combination of layers is the result of years of research and development. In addition, Puffy backs the mattress with a lifetime warranty that covers any defects in workmanship or materials.

How long will it last?

With memory foam mattresses, the quality of the materials used and the construction affect the overall lifespan of the mattress. Though the Puffy mattress has only been on the market for a couple of years, it is backed by years of testing, research, and development. On average, a memory foam mattress will last for 6 to 8 years. We expect the Puffy mattress to last this long, given its high-density foam base and quality manufacturing. The lifetime warranty gives additional peace of mind.

How well does it conform to my body?

The Puffy mattress closely conforms to the shape of your body. The soft top layer of gel-infused memory foam provides the feeling of being hugged, while the second layer provides a gentler contouring feel. The combination of these two layers cushions pressure points and keeps your spine aligned. Though it conforms closely, the Puffy mattress prevents the feeling of sleeping hot thanks to its temperature-regulating properties and breathable cover. The firm core support foam is more responsive than the average polyfoam bottom layer, so it also provides contouring support. The combination of these three layers provides responsive support without the feeling of sinking in or being trapped in the mattress.

Is the edge supportive?

Lack of edge support in memory foam mattresses is a common complaint, and the Puffy mattress is no exception. While the firm core support foam provides a stable foundation for the mattress, the thick top layers of memory foam are highly responsive to pressure. The Puffy mattress will still feel supportive if you sleep near the edge of the bed. However, you will most likely notice the lack of support around the perimeter of the mattress if you sit at the edge.

Does it sleep hot?

Because of the conforming nature of memory foam, these types of mattresses can tend to sleep hot as airflow is restricted. Memory foam also tends to absorb and retain heat. The Puffy mattress sleeps cooler than the average memory foam mattress. The top layer of cooling Cloud Foam is more breathable than traditional memory foam and pulls heat away from the body. This layer is also gel-infused for a cooling feel. The second layer of foam maintains a consistent temperature, as it is designed to resist contracting and expanding with temperature changes. The fabric cover is also breathable.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

Off-gassing is common with all-foam mattresses, and the smell tends to be stronger in “bed in a box” styles due to the vacuum sealed packaging. As such, there may be a slight odor to the Puffy mattress when it is first opened. This smell should dissipate within a few hours, especially in a well-ventilated room. At most, it may last a couple days.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The dense foam of the Puffy mattress absorbs movement, so you shouldn’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements throughout the night. The thick top layers of foam prevent motion from transferring across the bed.

Who is Best Suited for a Puffy Mattress?

When deciding if a mattress is right for you, there are multiple factors to consider. Sleeping position, body weight, and sharing the bed can all have an effect on how comfortable a mattress is.

The Puffy mattress is designed to provide comfort and support for all sleeping positions. The thick top layer of memory foam is soft enough to provide cushioning and support for side sleepers. For back sleepers, the medium-firm feel provides even support and cushioning to keep the spine properly aligned. This firmness should also prevent your hips and stomach from sinking in too far if you sleep on your stomach. However, the softer top layer of foam may not provide adequate support for those who are above average weight (heavier than 230 pounds). Heavier sleepers, especially those who sleep on their stomach, may sink into the mattress too much to be properly supported.

Those who sleep with a partner will appreciate the motion isolation of the Puffy mattress. The all-foam construction is also silent when bearing weight. This ensures that you should not hear or feel your partner’s movements throughout the night. However, these properties also mean the Puffy mattress has minimal bounce, so it may not be as ideal for sex as a hybrid or innerspring mattress would be.

The price point of the Puffy mattress is about average for an online “bed in a box” mattress style. The company offers seasonal promotions and sales, and discounts make it more affordable if you are shopping on a budget.
