Construction

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is a memory foam mattress that measures 10” tall. It is made of two layers that create a blend of support with a softer sleeping surface. The bottom layer offers support to help keep your spine aligned, which can prevent pain and allows you to get a quality night’s rest. Because this bottom layer is so supportive, you won’t feel like you’re sinking in too deeply into this mattress, as you might feel when sleeping on a traditional or lower-quality memory foam mattress.

That bottom layer is topped by a comfortable thinner layer of Tuft & Needle Adaptive foam. This Adaptive foam conforms to your body and helps to relieve pressure, keeping you comfortable. Both graphite and cooling gel have been added into this upper layer to wick heat away from your body and to keep the mattress feeling cool during the night.

The mattress cover is soft yet breathable. It is not intended to be removed and can be spot cleaned.

Firmness

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is only available in a medium-firm feel. This medium-firmness is a versatile option, since it accommodates a variety of sleeping styles. While side sleepers may find a softer mattress more comfortable, stomach and back sleepers often find that a medium firmness is about right.

While this mattress offers the firmness that will help to support both heavier and softer sleepers, the fact that it is topped with foam adds comfort so that it doesn’t feel too firm when you lie down. The memory foam helps to relieve pressure while the firmness of this mattress helps you sleep comfortably without letting you sink down too deeply into the mattress, which is what can happen with some softer mattresses.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Breakdown

We’ve highlighted information about the specific features of the Tuft & Needle Mattress below, and you can read more about our mattress review process in our methodology page.

Is it made from quality materials?

Tuft & Needle is known for sourcing quality materials produced right here in the United States for its mattresses. The Tuft & Needle Mattress is crafted from fabric from a 90-year-old textile mill in the Carolinas, while the foam is also poured and cut in America. This mattress features the company’s Adaptive foam, which is an elevated memory foam that contains both cooling gel and graphite to aid with temperature regulation. Each mattress is finished in Southern California, with quality craftsmanship.

How long will it last?

Tuft & Needle has established a great reputation for producing durable products, but because the company is still relatively new, most of their products haven’t been truly tested long-term. This mattress is backed by Tuft & Needle’s 10-year limited warranty, so it’s reasonable to expect that the mattress will hold up for at least eight years, but may start to degrade after that.

How well does it conform to my body?

The Tuft & Needle Adaptive foam is designed to contour to your body like traditional memory foam, but it also offers more support so you don’t feel like you’re sinking down into the mattress. The mattress actively conforms to your body, which helps to reduce pressure points and makes for a comfortable sleep surface. It may even help to relieve aches and pains. While the mattress does conform well, you won’t feel like you’re “stuck” in the mattress or unable to move around.

Is the edge supportive?

The Tuft & Needle does lack edge support, which is a common issue with memory foam mattresses. Without edge support, you may find it slightly more difficult to get into or out of bed, especially if you’re used to sitting on the edge of the mattress and pushing yourself up with your hands. If you rely on the mattress edge to be firm and supportive to help you rise or to create a firm base to sit on, the Tuft & Needle Mattress may not be right for you.

Does it sleep hot?

Traditionally, memory foam can sleep hot, but Tuft & Needle has taken steps to prevent that issue with this mattress. The top layer of memory foam includes graphite, which wicks heat from your body as you sleep. The layer also includes a cooling gel that helps to regulate the temperature of the mattress itself, so you sleep cooler.

The fact that the mattress is supportive and doesn’t let you sink too far down into it also makes it sleep cool. Some softer memory foams may feel like sleeping on a cloud, but as you sink into them the foam presses up against a greater amount of your body, reducing the airflow against your skin and making you feel hot. Because the Tuft & Needle Mattress blends together support and contouring, this isn’t as much of a problem with this mattress.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

All compressed foam mattresses off-gas to a degree once they’re unwrapped and unrolled. The Tuft & Needle Mattress will release a faint smell, but that smell will quickly dissipate in a well-ventilated room.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The Tuft & Needle Mattress’s memory foam offers excellent motion isolation. This isolation means that you and your partner can move and shift about during the night without disturbing each other. Like most memory foam mattresses, the Tuft & Needle Mattress traps most motion whether you’re getting into bed or just need to reposition.

Who is Best Suited for a Tuft & Needle Mattress?

Finding the mattress that’s right for you is a personal decision, but the Tuft & Needle Mattress is naturally well-suited for certain kinds of sleepers. Because this mattress is medium-firm and features multiple layers of memory foam, it’s a comfortable choice for side and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers may find the mattress a bit too firm, but that will depend on personal preference. Stomach sleepers who are above average weight may find that the mattress lacks the support in the stomach area that they need to stay comfortable through the night. This mattress is largely versatile, though, and most sleepers will appreciate its combination of supportive yet conforming surface.

Because this mattress helps to prevent motion transfer, it’s ideal for anyone who sleeps with a partner. This reduced motion transfer is particularly useful if you and a partner go to bed or wake up at different times, as well as if you tend to reposition or get into and out of bed during the night.

The Tuft & Needle Mattress features an overall quality construction, yet it doesn’t have the high price that some comparable mattresses carry. With the ability to order the mattress online and enjoy free shipping, it may be the right choice for any buyer within the United States who is working with a tight budget or who simply appreciates a good deal and the overall value of this mattress. Because you can pair this mattress with a variety of bed bases, including adjustable bases, it can be an affordable way to upgrade an existing bed.
